Electric company

 When the power goes off

in the mountains

we snuggled close, letting the

electricity of bodies light up

the room brighter

than any fire ever could

Blank slate

I took your words as

promises, as plans,

but they were just possibilities

Captivated

Catching up with you is

like catching butterflies

elusive and brief but beautiful

operating system

is it just a quirk
in the system
that those who are dying

on the frontlines of injustice
across our country
are mostly black and brown?

or is it built into
the system to
oppress those with skin tones

darker than the colonizers who
stole this land?
I'll say: it's no quirk.

There might be dark forces

IQ test

"Oh, you're a smart girl,"
he said, as
if I was somehow less

attractive because of my intelligence.
"I guess so,"
I said and walked away.

Grounded

the crows outside my window
know I feed
my dog at 8 a.m.

every morning they show up
to nibble the
leftover kibble and laugh at

the grounded little lives we
choose inside the
worry, the routine, the glass

prisons we call home, cars,
restaurants, and offices,
never learning to fly free

Thunderstruck

He struck like lightening,
brilliant and
faster than the blink

of an eye blackening
silently
before the thunderclap

A little death

The death begins when
you simply
walk into the room

First, you steal my breath
Then my thoughts
and all my senses

The rigormortis
of anxious
anticipation

stiffens each muscle
as you walk
in my direction

You kiss my flushed cheek
and this world
all but disappears

Sunsets

You rode into the sunset
disappearing behind a
horizon of your own making

I the steadfast sun and
you the earth
turning ever away from love

S.O.S.

I never sent
the letters I wrote you
turns out that

the scribbled words
were really more for me
than for you
