The Mean-ings

Daddy never
beat her
but he
meaned
Mama plenty.

He had a
tongue like
a whip,
a loud crack
that could
catch you
by the ankle
and trip-topple
you like a tower.

One good
snap and she
wouldn't walk
straight for days,
the weight of
his temper
slung on
her shoulders
till she slouched
to the floor.

Daddy never
beat her
but he
meaned
Mama dead.
