Heart of glass

 When they tell you

to make art of your pain

they don’t tell you

that you’re going to feel it

so deeply that it

rewrites your insides

like doodles

on scraps of paper

that harden into glass and scrape

your insides raw red

that each of those glass shards

are pieces of a

shattered heart

that you can’t quite

remember the shape of

that your fingers will bleed on

each hard edge wiggled

into place

in this miserable mosaic

that breathes with the artist’s breath

just barely

Exalted

You worship me as
your goddess
pray that I’ll save you

kneel at my altar
until I
fall from grace when your
prayers are not answered

my whole heart can't mend
your broken one
cannot love away

your loneliness
only gaze
at your loveliness
as you used to see mine

Travelers

You were never
my North Star

but a fellow traveler
a cheerful companion

who held my hand
on a rocky path

who sang me songs
to pass the time

and kissed my cheeks
so sweetly

that I almost forgot
that your destination

was never the same
as my own

Barren

She'd always dreamed of
holding a baby in her
arms, worry melting

away as fingers
traced tendrils of newborn hair,
nostrils inhaling

the intense sweetness
of fresh, new love.

There was no pain in
the place where life would not grow,
just the ache of arms

forever empty,
instead carrying the weight
of her silent grief

the intense sting of
the word "barren."

If I Were Your Heart

For Ryan ... I found your blogreading the a heartbreaking ending just as the blood moon crept through the sky

If I were your heart
I'd be crushed
by the weight of those memories,

brothers bleeding before my eyes,
faces flushed red
like tonight's moon, eclipsed by the

darkness of my own shadow

Frozen in time

You say that
she's ancient history
but here I
am chipping away
at the rock
hard sediment encasing
your fossilized heart

Treading water

I carried you
held your head above water
when you were
drowning in misery

I drowned with you
unable to float us both
when the burden
you carried sunk
us both

April PAD Day 2 - voyage

When smoke gets in your eyes

How could I
see the smoke signals you
were sending me

when I didn't
even notice that our home
was on fire

No place like home

She sleeps in my bed
missing her own
but glad for the warmth

of my Egyptian cotton sheets
and the neutral
Target comforter set I shared

with the ex-boyfriend who left
me to play
house with a neighbor lady.

She thanks me for my
generosity, not knowing
I would burn that bed

and flee this tortured place,
run from this
incestuous den of communal pain

and the home built together,
where any memories
of warmth have long died.

Sunsets

You rode into the sunset
disappearing behind a
horizon of your own making

I the steadfast sun and
you the earth
turning ever away from love

Free at last

I had a dream
that one day
we would hear
church bells
clanging
like the love
in our chests

that we would
no longer
walk alone
but be an oasis
beckoning
each other
across the desert

S.O.S.

I never sent
the letters I wrote you
turns out that

the scribbled words
were really more for me
than for you

Maybe

Maybe
we would
be laughing now
rolling on the floor
like the children we are

Maybe
we would
be holding each
other's hands as we
journeyed into old age together

Maybe
we would
be bouncing babies
on our arthritic knees
remember our own little ones

Maybe
you could
forget the words
that drove you away
and remember this life instead

Crushed

You
tossed her out
just one more can in
a heap of recyclable
hearts

Singed

The slow simmer
of your indifference has burned
straight through me
